Putz parade

“I’m sure people will be bringing this up for years, saying that, you know, ‘You won that race,’” Cavic said. “Well, this is just what the results showed. This is what the electronic board showed. I kind of have mixed emotions about it. This could be kind of a good thing. If I lost by a tenth of a second or two-tenths of a second, I could probably be a lot cooler about this. But with a hundredth of a second, I’ll have a whole lot more people saying, ‘You really won that race.’

During the medal ceremony, the Armenian-born Abrahamian—who also lost a 2004 Olympic semifinal match on a disputed call—took the bronze from around his neck and, angrily, dropped it on the mat as he walked away. He did not take part in the rest of the medal ceremony.

Iran swimmer avoids Israeli pool showdown in Beijing

"Alirezaei swims in lane one and the representative of the Zionist regime (Israel) in lane seven, so they will not face each other," INOC secretary Ali Kafashian told ISNA news agency prior to the race.
Several other media reports stated Alirezaei had been ordered by Iranian authorities to withdraw from the competition to avoid swimming against Israeli swimmer Tom Be'eri.

How the Iranian press is selling the story:

TEHRAN -- Iranian swimmer Mohammad Alirezaei has pulled out of the Olympic Games on Saturday because of illness.

The 100-meter breaststroke swimmer was carried to a hospital in Beijing, according to the Iranian Swimming Federation officials.
